We recently donated a private 6 hour charter that auctioned off for over $1200 for the Susen G. Komen for the Cure.

So far this year we have had the pleasure of donating to some great charity organizations – American Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Boys and Girls Club, Ronald McDonald House, college scholarships, and CPKIDZ (CP-cerebral palsy). I realize we rarely offer discounts, free trips, and coupons to the general public but this allows us to donate our time and money to those families in real need.

Birding Ft Myers Beach

Went out again with the DEP biologist to help count bird nests in Estero Bay. Not sure how much help I was but I really am enjoying them letting me tag along. We have counted many pelican nests, and have also counted nests of reddish egrets, snowies, white egrets, great blues, and cormorants. This is a picture taken by the DEP staff of a pelican with chics in Estero Bay. Look close, these chics are tiny:pelican-chics.jpg:

Capt. Mike Denegre of Good Time Charters reports lots of action in the passes.  Most of his charters this past week focused on Estero Bay and big Carlos pass where spanish mackeral were in with large numbers along with the regular area residents ladyfish, bonnet head sharks, blue fish and jacks.  Also mixed in with the bag were several small black tip shark and pompano all caught with live shrimp either on a jighead or free lining.  The passes proved to be pretty consistent either tide but the bay showed much more productivity on the morning incoming tide last week.  The grass flats still produce sea trout of mid to upper slot with several nice ones over 20 in.  Along the mangroves both redfish and snook were sucking up green backs as well as live shrimp, free lining when able and using as little weight as possible if needed.  most submerged branches, especially those sunk deep, are housing lots of mangrove snapper right now and they love small bite size shrimp or even pieces of bigger shrimp.

My husband and I spent a wonderful morning (9AM to 12 noon) touring the area around Estero Bay off Ft. Myers Beach. Christina, our naturalist, and Carl, our captain and historian, were great guides. We toured the waters and came upon a pod of dolphins who were swimming all around the boat. They were a delight to watch. Christina and Carl pointed out an osprey nest with male and female in residence. We stopped at Lovers Key State Park Beach and walked along the shore. Christina pointed out many different shells describing many interesting facts. We found a bottlehead shark that had washed up on shore and was unfortunately dead. We got to look at it closely and talk about its features. We saw a spotted sea ray swimming along the shore. I asked to go to Mound Key. It is an archeological site. The Calusa Indians made large mounds of shells on this key which are still there today. We were able to get off the pontoon and walk thru the island to the top of the mounds. It was fascinating to think about this group of people building these mounds around the time of Ponce de Leon (early 1500’s). We saw a turtle along the way and talked about the mangroves and how they grow. The 3 hours went quickly. On the way back to the marina we saw a bald eagle. It was a beautiful trip with friendly and knowledgeable guides. I would recommend it highly.

I recently had the opportunity to join the Biologists at Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve to count bird nests. It is more difficult than I had anticipated but a great learning experience. I plan to volunteer with them throughout the summer to assist. On the island in the picture we found pelicans, cormorants, and great american egrets on nests.034.jpg
