Jillybean and Cristina

We participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life fundraiser event. Good Time Charters was one of the sponsors for the event and we also teamed up with Flipper’s by the Bay restaurant to raise additional money for the American Cancer Society. Our friend Jillybean (yes folks, I said Jillybean) from Flipper’s was our team’s captain, and we got together to walk the relay for about 17 hours. Jillybean and I got there early to set up our table to raffle off prizes, and I even sold a few of my photobooks, to add to the donations. We started out strong on the walking relay with my toy gator as our baton but our team started to dwindle and then eventually it was just me, Mike, and Jillybean. At about 3AM I had to rest for about an hour, actually we all did. I felt like I failed because people with cancer don’t get a rest, or a break from it. There was a huge turn out for the event and they had the luminarias all lit up. It really was a cool sight that night on the beach. Toodles- Cristina

Fun Group!

Standup Paddleboarding fun!

Capt Mike has been reporting a great catch in Estero Bay Fort Myers beach, with sheepshead, spanish mackerel, and redfish. He has also been catching jacks and pompano- the jewel of the sea! Delish. Yesterday, I met Capt Mike up at his boat after his charter and he had a bag of mackerel fillets that his customers decided not to keep all of. I’m talking what felt like 6 lbs of fish, and Mike asks if I want this for dinner.  So as usual I said let’s think about, because, honestly I was too tired to prepare anything for dinner. As I am cleaning the boat, a super nice older gentlemen with twinkling eyes, and this awesome Italian accent (his name is Joe he says), and his son approach asking general questions, and then ask if we ever sell our catch. So Mike offers him the bag of fillets for free! They were thrilled and so was I because that meant I was off the hook for preparing dinner! Yay! They felt bad because they had nothing to offer in return even though we were wanting nothing for the fish. So they leave, and I am already thinking about where I want to go out for dinner. 13 minutes later, the two Italians show back up with a bottle of wine, Cabernet in fact, one of my faves. He offers it as a gift from HIS Mazza Estates winery up in Ontario, and as I hear him and Mike conversing more about it, I am reading the label on the bottle. It starts out ” When Joe Mazza Sr. ventured to Canada in 1958 from his native Italy…” and so at this point I am imagining Joe Sr, with his great smile, selectively picking the grapes off the vines, and literally creating wine with his bare hands, then pouring the miraculous liquid into a glass for me try and it is delightful. Yes, I know, my imagination runs away sometimes. How cool was I finding this whole imaginary scene and experience of randomly meeting Joe Sr? Very. Now what Joe Sr, doesn’t realize is that I am that kind of person that will plan an entire vacation around an experience like this. Don’t be surprised Mr. Mazza Sr if you see me and Mike show up for a tour of your winery some day! That is one of the many many reasons I love this line of work, you never know who you are going to meet.

Well, the dolphins sure have been frisky lately. Last week, they were a bit stand offish and were not interested in us AT ALL. But that has changed this week and they have been playing and being very active. The manatees and the sea turtles are also around feeding on the flats. The wading birds are getting their nesting plumage and building nests on the rookeries. We had a fun group last week on our Stand up Paddleboard Shelling eco-tour too and they saw dolphins while out that trip also. What a bonus! What a great time to be on the water in Fort Myers beach!

Capt Mike best Fishing Guide Fort Myers Beach!

Good Time Charters best fishing charter Ft Myers Beach!

Hey folks! Guess what? Good Time Charter was voted best fishing charter in Fort Myers Beach and our very own Capt Mike was voted best Fishing Captain in Fort Myers Beach! How cool is that? Well, I have to say, Capt Mike is the best fishing captain in my opinion too. Of course he is an awesome fisherman, but lets face it, those are a dime a dozen around here, he knows how to work the tides, knows the “honey holes”, what tackle to use, and all that other fish talk. But what makes him an awesome fishing guide is his lack of arrogance, his incredible patience, charming personality, and he truly enjoys taking passengers out, watching them enjoy the sport of fishing, and providing them with a very memorable and fun experience.

Sea pork

Capt Mike

What a way to end the month of February! Awesome fishing, highs in the low to mid 80s, and SUNSHINE! We have been finding all kinds of cool sealife on our morning run. The other day some of our passengers brought me “weird rubbery stuff” that they had found while on our Coastal sealife dolphin and shelling cruise. What they found were colonial tunicates! These animals are so neat to me, but I find all marine invertebrates fascinating. The zooids all live together within this clear plasma-looking rubbery stuff called the tunic. They are filter feeders and I have seen some about a foot in diameter. Similar in function maybe to a sponge but fancier, as they have gill slits, and nerve cords. I have seen them in a variety of fashionable colors and my favorite of their colors is orange, but I have seen them in charcoal gray, black, and purple. When they die and bleach out they turn a creamy color, kind of looks like fatback, hence their nickname “Sea Pork”. We have them wash in around our shorelines, and they live all around Florida on up to Maine.

Capt Mike has had a banner week of fishing. Catching sheepshead, mackeral, and snapper. He had a cute kid on his charter the other day that came on the boat and told Capt Mike he wanted to catch a shark. Now, anyone that knows all of us here at Good Time Charters, knows that we do not like to disappoint. But sharks are usually biting here in the summer, and while they are around right now, chances are not as good that you would get one. It is similar to someone wanting to see a manatee on our dolphin cruise in early February, while it is not impossible, it is just not likely with the cooler water temps. Anyway, wouldn’t you know that kid caught a bonnethead shark?! Wow, I am not sure who was happier, the kid with his prize, or Mike knowing that he just made this kid’s day! Well, I guess they both win. Well folks, thanks again for joining us on our trips and letting us enhance your experience out here on our beautiful waters. Cheers- Cristina and the rest of us here at Good Time Charters.

Fort Myers Beach dolphin watch and sunset cruises

February 22nd, 2012

Sunny warm days, dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, what more could you want? Oh yeah, great fishing. This past week has been awesome, wonderful folks visiting Fort Myers beach and joining us for our excursions, near perfect weather, great boating conditions…well Sunday night got a little squirrelly but we got some fun tours out to see dolphins anyway during the day. Yesterday morning we saw a pod of dolphins chasing a school of fish in the shallow flats. They are such powerful swimmers, that they look like torpedoes moving through the water towards their target! It was so cool to see them maneuver in such shallow water.  One dolphin caught a fish, and as if he knew we were watching, tossed it in the air to play with it and maybe show it off before he swallowed it. How cool! We have been spotting the manatees more and more, and even spotted a sea turtle this morning on our Sealife shelling and dolphin cruise! Thank you everyone that has joined us recently for a cruise, it really has been a pleasure to share this beautiful landscape with you. The sunsets have just been amazing, so amazing that I chartered our boat for my family to spread my grandma’s ashes at sunset. Wow, what a beautiful night it turned out to be too. On our way out to the Gulf we had dolphins jumping and leaping in the wake of our boat, what a treat that was! After the sun set that night, the dusk sky was lit up with hues of pinks and purples. What an amazing week this has turned out to be here at Fort Myers Beach. It started out cold and gloomy, by our standards anyway, and we had to cancel a lot of tours. Gosh, I hate to disappoint people but it really was not good boating weather. But, WOW! has it transformed into a beautiful week in Paradise! Sunny, warm, in the 80′s by afternoon, and the water has been glass calm. Spotted a couple manatee yesterday on our morning Coastal Sealife Dolphin and Sealife cruise! What a treat as many of them have been hiding out in the rivers and creeks, but I know manatees love to eat so i knew they would need to come out to feed sooner or later. What a beautiful morning it was too, and dolphins galore. Saw a bottlenosed dolphin I call  Blackbeard yesterday morning on that trip as well! The dolphins were soo playful that morning too, swimming along side of us, jumping and frolicking near the boat. What a sight and I can’t believe we actually had two families not show for the tour that morning. Boy, did they sure miss out! It was another one of those magical mornings for me and hopefully our passengers enjoyed it as much as we did. I had some awesome passengers on board, all ages too, and we all got a long like one happy family out on the water together. We saw so many dolphins, manatees, and even a sea turtle popped up a couple times next to the boat to sneak a quick breath and peek at us. The fishing has picked up as well and Capt Mike has reported the bite is back on! He came back from a charter yesterday with slot reds, and some big sheepies. Well, gotta run and get ready for the morning’s adventures!

Dolphins!

Vicki and Earl

We love Estero Bay Fort Myers Beach! There is always wildlife around and I ain’t talkin’ about visitors from Minnesota! Although, they are known to be wild, haha. The Osprey are nesting and we are noticing that many have laid their clutch. So hopefully, in a couple months we have some cute baby Osprey to see. One Osprey couple, Vicki and Earl (depicted in the picture from last nesting season 2011), we have been observing for a few years now and they have this whole nesting thing down pat. They meet up around November, Earl rebuilds the nest to Vicki’s liking, they do a little dance, and wallah! Vicki sits on about two or three eggs while Earl brings her yummy fish to fatten her up. Now, I have read that they take turns doing this but I think Vicki is a bit of a control freak and prefers to squat on the eggs herself. The chics hatch, the strong survive, Earl works even harder to feed all of them, Earl gets skinny, the chics fledge, and Vicki and Earl say see ya til November! And they part ways to spend the summer apart. That’s it in an eggshell! Well, Ain’t life Grand. Speaking of a grand life, I spent the past weekend in my hometown of Jacksonville, Fl to visit my Grandma for the last time. Now, Grandma and I didn’t have that typical Grandma-Grand daughter relationship, and I really don’t know what to call it. She wouldn’t offer milk and cookies, but Chivas, Chivas on the rocks rather, and she would say “Just because I don’t hug you, doesn’t mean I don’t love you”. I never to this day have developed a liking for Scotch, I’m more of a cold beer with a shot of bourbon on the side kind of gal. My first visit to SW Florida was with Grandma, and I fell in love with the place. Actually, she introduced me to a lot of cool things like opera and poetry. What a cool lady. I got the news today while out on my Coastal Sealife dolphin and shelling cruise that she passed away this morning at 96 yrs old, peacefully, with her children by her side. What a great group of folks I had on my tour this morning too, thanks Peggy, Karen, and Greg for joining us and bringing your friends and family! You guys were a pleasure to have out with us. This morning was less than ideal, east wind, overcast, not warm, but the dolphins put on quite a show for us, and we had a nice time at the island looking at all the sea stars and conchs. A great morning on the water with a great group of folks! Well, it is supposed to get cold here this weekend, only a high of 70 on Sunday! Yikes, I might have to break out my jacket! lol- Cristina and the rest of the Good Time Family

Its’ raining today! Well, at least for the morning, or maybe for the next hour, or for the next twenty minutes. If you’ve lived here in South Florida for any significant amount of time then you know the routine. Growing up here in Florida I think has made me a bit insensitive to the strong possibility that most people in the rest of the states do not deal with so much erratic unpredictable weather, at least on a daily basis, or some days even an hourly basis. For instance, in Connecticut if they say it will rain, it does. Here, however, if they say it will rain, it might. It might rain for 5 minutes somewhere across the street, it might rain all day nowhere else except over your house, it might be sunny and beautiful, or it might just in fact rain everywhere. Our weather forecasts are about as reliable as my husband’s old dodge truck, some days she cranked right up, many days she didn’t, on her feisty days she cranked up but then the rest of the day I would have to park on some sort of down-cline with an unobstructed runway so I could get a running start to get her to turn over. You never really knew what to expect but to always be prepared, have a backup plan, and savor what the day brings. Ah how I miss that old truck…not really.

So back to this rain, we have canceled our morning fishing charter, and dolphin cruise because of it. Bummer. Not only do we not get to “work” and make any money today, but we are all somewhat addicted to our work, we miss it when we don’t get to take our tours out, to see the smiles, hear the ooohs n ahhhs, the thank yous, and sometimes even get hugs from our passengers because they not only enjoyed their trip but they enjoyed us as well. This line of work is definitely for that kind of reward, being paid in the process is just a bonus. Some days are tougher than others and the wildlife doesn’t always cooperate. All of us here genuinely care if our passengers are having a good time, and experiencing more than what they were expecting. Believe us, not finding dolphin on a tour is our biggest fear, and in the rare times it does happen, we feel beat up and defeated knowing when we get back to the dock our passengers are leaving us disappointed. But like I said that doesn’t happen often, maybe once a month, maybe.

Well, we must be doing something right because we sure do have a lot of regulars and returns. Our regulars the Filburn’s are in town and they have gone on several fishing charters and most recently chartered our boat for a private sunset cruise. Let me tell you what mamma Filburn sure can fish! We have been watching their children, and grandchildren grow up over the past few years. We love that. Their sunset cruise was spectacular, with dolphins chasing our boat out the pass into the Gulf water,2 and 3 dolphins jumping at a time. When the dolphins tired of us and swam off, we set up a nice drift to watch the sunset out over the Gulf. There were some low lying clouds too that made it extra colorful, the attached picture doesn’t do it any justice. On the way back to dock, flocks of egrets, ibis, and heron were flying in to rest for the night and the sky was lit up with hues of pinks, orange, and purple. A beautiful sunset cruise for a beautiful family. Well, I’m going to go take advantage of a rainy morning and work on my new photo book collection! Horse conch and lightening whelk

Fort Myers beach dolphin cruise

Wow, we have been seeing so much wildlife where do I begin! Our morning cruises have truly been spectacular, our afternoon runs have been awesome with no shortage of dolphin sightings, and the sunset cruises have just been amazing to catch sight of dolphins, watch the sunset out over the gulf, and then watch the flocks of birds flying in to roost for the night. On a recent Coastal sealife shelling and dolphin cruise, we not only had playful dolphins jumping out of the water and playing near the boat but we also found another “Mongo” whelk, as well as a huge horse conch, and a sea hare. We put them back in the water after checking them out and talking about them with our passengers. Then as if the morning was as good as it could get, we saw a mother manatee with her calf moving into the grass flats to feed! What a treat as they have been rare to see lately with the cool water temps.

On a recent afternoon dolphin cruise, Capt Mike rescued a brown pelican that was entangled in fishing line, hooked in the leg, and unable to fly. Capt Mike was able to free the bird successfully and it flew away, but noticed that there was tons more fishing line still waiting to entangle more birds. He had me meet him at the dock after his tour, to go out and help cut all this line from the island. This isn’t just any island but a rookery island where our pelicans and wading birds are known to ‘rest and nest’. As I waded slowly over to the island, so I wouldn’t stress out and spook any birds, I was amazed at how much of this fishing line was there, woven over the branches,  all the way to the interior of the island and back out, all the way to the top branches, and we measured about 75 ft of line that I took out of there. Wow, good eye Capt Mike for spotting that pelican. Speaking of Capt Mike, he has been reporting the redfish bite is back! We had a couple cold fronts slow the fishing down a couple weeks ago, but now with the water temps climbing back into the mid 60′s the redfish are hungry and biting! Capt Mike’s Fort Myers beach fishing charters have been catching sea trout, sheepshead, and redfish.  WooHoo! Who likes Blackened Redfish Tacos?? ME ME!

If you have been around Fort Myers Beach lately, you have been enjoying our wonderful temperatures and gorgeous sunsets. Everyday seems magical here for us, and we thank all of you that come out with us to learn about and experience our paradise. Well, off for more Fort Myers Beach boating adventures- Cristina and the rest of the Good Time Family.

Fort Myers Beach dolphin cruise

January 10th, 2012

Wow what a busy end of the year we had around the holidays! We have been spotting many dolphins, and lots of different birds. The sealife at the beach has been superb and we have been finding many sea stars, sea urchins, and whelks. The live critters are released but we have been finding many empty conchs and pretty shells to take home as well. The manatees have been seeking warmer water, and the dolphins are playful as ever. On a recent coastal sealife, dolphin, and shelling cruise, our guide Cristina found a huge live lightening whelk that was about 14″ long. Our other guide Marlowe, that guides our Everglades Tours, said “that is a Mongo whelk!” So we named it The Mongo and released him back into the Gulf. The weather at Fort Myers Beach has been very cooperative for this time of year with average temps in the mid 70′s by day.
